この作品は最初から最後まで全て筆ペンで描きました。北海道教育大学で日本画を研究生として学んでいたころ、日本画に使う筆をたくさん使ってみて、非常に気に入りました。アメリカのテキサス大学で美術を専攻として学んでいたころ、油絵の制作で利用する筆とは全く違い、どちらかと言いますとイラストや漫画の世界で利用されている筆に近い感じでした。今のアメコミにはペンが多く使われているようですが、子供の時に読んでいたスーパーマンなどのアメコミには筆が一般だったらしいです。日本画の細かい筆を手に取り、その頃読んでいた漫画を思い出しながら制作することもたくさんありました。

I drew the entirety of this piece, from start to finish, in brush pen. When I was studying Japanese painting (nihonga) at the Hokkaido University of Education, I tried lots of different brushes used for Japanese painting, and I really liked them a lot. They are completely different from the brushes I used to make oil paintings when I was majoring in art at the University of Texas in the USA. In fact, they felt more like the kind of brushes used in the world of illustration or comic books. A lot of American cartoonists seem to be using pens these days, but I think it was fairly common to use brushes in the comics I read growing up, like Superman. Taking the thin Japanese brush in hand, I could feel myself remembering the comics I read as a kid while I was painting.

日本画の研究期間が終わってからもずっと日本画の筆を使い続け、墨でイラストを描いていました。まったく日本画らしくない作品を描いていても、なぜか日本画の筆を拘りました。

Even after my research period for Japanese painting was over, I kept using Japanese painting brushes and drawing lines with sumi ink. And even though I was making drawings that were completely unlike what Japanese paintings are supposed to be, for some reason I really wanted to keep limiting myself to Japanese painting brushes only.

ある日、昔の漫画家たちを真似て、現在のアメコミ世界でも筆を主に使っていることで有名で、レトロ調の作品を描くマイク・アレッドがどんな筆を使っているか調べてみたら、「ウィンザー＆ニュートン」という大手欧米画材メーカーが出しているシリーズ７の No. 1 という筆だと分かりました。早速買ってみて、使ってみると日本画の筆に共通点がとても感じながら、不思議な堅さに惹かれました。

One day, I decided to try to find out what kind of brush was favored by Mike Allred, a cartoonist who draws retro style comics and is famous for imitating cartoonists of the past in the use of a brush as his main tool in today’s American comic industry. I found out that he uses a Series 7, No. 1 brush from Winsor & Newton, a large scale Western art supply manufacturer. I went right out and bought one. Upon trying it out, I could feel a very strong resemblance to the Japanese brushes, and at the same time I fell in love with its strange sense of hardness.

筆ペンを使うようになったのはそのあと、日本画の筆もウィンザー＆ニュートンの筆もとても気に入っていましたが、どこにでも制作できないという欠点からより便利なものを探すようになった結果でした。筆の先をインクのビンに入れてから描くという、周りのものが多少汚れる方法が不要な「筆ペン」にたどり着きました。日本メーカーである「ぺんてる」の筆を画材屋で見つけた時、よし、これで喫茶店でも、自分のうちの仕事部屋のパソコンの近くでも、どこでも利用できるぞ！という第一印象でした。

The thing that got me started using brush pens was that, though I was completely in love with the Japanese painting brushes and the Winsor & Newton brushes, they had the unfortunate shortcoming of not allowing you to draw wherever you want. So I started to look for something more convenient. And that is how I finally found the brush pen, which frees you from a process of work that tends to get your surroundings a tad messy, with all that dipping of the brush tip into an ink container. When I found brushes by the Japanese manufacturer “Pentel” at an art supply store, the first thing I thought was, alright, now I can use these at a cafe or even close to my computer, or anywhere!

そのながれで筆ペンを利用するようになりました。利用するようになったあと、日本の漫画家であるカネコ・アツシも筆ペンを使っていることを再認識し、彼の作品をたくさん再読しました。やはり、ウィンザー＆ニュートンの筆を主に利用しているマイク・アレッドのタッチと共通する部分が強く感じます。

And that is how I came to use brush pens. After I started using them, I remembered how the Japanese cartoonist Atsushi Kaneko uses a brush pen, and reread a bunch of his comics. And it was definitely no surprise that I felt a very strong similarity between his style and the style of Mike Allred, who uses that Winsor & Newton brush as his main tool.

今回の作品は鉛筆のデッサンや下絵などを最初に描かずに、ぺんてるの筆ペンで描きました。モチーフである男の意味はなんでしょう？その頭から出てきている妖怪のようなものの意味は何でしょう？描いたのは私なのに、答えられません。

I drew this piece directly with a Pentel brush pen, without drawing any sort of a sketch or a pencil drawing first. What is the meaning of the man standing in the center of the drawing? And what does that strange creature coming up out of his head mean? Even though this drawing did come out of my own hand, I have absolutely no answer…
